Hiyama watched as each student shuffled to his or her new seat. Some had more difficulty than others, carrying their many books and pencils to the other side of the room. Some had to make more than one trip, carrying stacks of crumpled papers. Some had even found treasure troves of things in their desks that were stuffed past the brim, so that their desktops were elevated and angled.
It took much too long for everyone to move. Students always took their time, and it was quite annoying. Hiyama continued to patiently watch, but there was a tickling urge in him to start screaming at them. It was only a small want, however, and thus, easily ignored.
Hiyama was a bit agregated by the time everyone had settled. So, in order to get revenge, he decided to pull a pop quiz out of his armpit. Not literally.
"Everyone," he said, a bit too cheerily, "Take out a clean sheet of lined paper!"
The students moaned and obliged. If they had properly done their homework, then the pop quiz would be only a slight problem. Well, maybe more than that. Hiyama wrote some of the hardest questions he could think of that pertained to the students' grade level and were (somewhat) related to the homework.
It was easy to see on every student's face. There was panic, fear, and strain. Those who were answering the questions were doing so with great uncertainty and fear. Most just sat and stared at the board like it had grown arms and legs and was performing a tap dance.
Everyone's grades were going to take a beating. Hiyama smiled gently, but it was actually a smug smile of triumph, not that anyone had noticed. If anyone had passed this test, they would have to be a genius. Even people who spoke English fluently as their first language were going to have trouble with this.
"You have fifteen minutes," Hiyama added gleefully.

Zatsune quickly moved to her new desk. Taking her sweet time to bring one book, paper, pencil, another book, and her lunch. That reminded her of how hungry she was. "Everyone, take out a clean sheet of lined paper!" Hiyama-sensei said. Zatsune groaned. She started taking english last year at home. She hated it. She had such a hard time with other languages. Even though she was getting better, she was going to epicly fail this test. She wrote down the questions on the board and began to answer them. after the second question she put her pencil down and held her head tight. Her head could not comprehend this. Zatsune then closed her eyes and tried to remember those stupid english lessons she never paid attention to. She actually remembered most of it now that she listened. But just for fun she answered one question with the wrong answer.
Akaito moved to his new desk. He was far away from Neru-san. When Hiyama-sensei announced the popquiz he hit his head on the desk. Akaito was going to flunk out of high school at this rate. He grabbed a peice of paper and just sat there looking at it. How could this day get any worse for Akaito?

Len smirked, yes this was exactly what I wanted to happen! I have studied all night too! He grabbed the nearest writing utensil on his desk, and got out a clean sheet of paper. Then, the boy went to work.
As he looked the quiz over, he could feel his heart sink. These problems were horrifying! Did Hiyama-sensei pull them out of his ass? They were so difficult. He knew that this test was definitely not going to go well. He did his homework, but he didn't study enough! Everything else was taking up his studying time, and he hardly got enough sleep. Gosh, life was so busy. It was tough being him. Even though some had it worse.
Len decided to suck it up, and do his best.

Ryu gulped. She might not pass. But she might. But she was so scared. How could she answer all these? Well whatever. SHe took out a sheet of paper that was clean and didn't have anything on it and began to work. She smiled. She sighed and answered the questions. She didn't know she was getting every one RIGHT!!! [and when I mean right every question was correct! I am serious! For real! She is smart! She got ALL right!] Sighing she raised her hand to turn her paper in. Not knowing she was going to get an A or A+... However Neru was having horrendous luck. She guessed each thing with a number on her phone. It was like she was texting on paper for each answer. Finally she went back to her phone to continue texting Dell. Or whoever she was texting. ((REALLY RYU DID GET ALL RIGHT! but this is a rare occasion... =D Neru on the other hand...didnt...))

Yuki stared blankly at the board. Then she looked at her blank sheet of lined paper and her hand gripping her pencil. What. Was this test even English? Maybe, but Yuki couldn't tell.
There seemed to only be only one way to get through this quiz, though, and that was to tackle each question to the finish. First question!
...
She was already stuck. Somewhere in there "addition" was written. Maybe it was something to do with math? Yuki wrote down, "12 + 12 = 24". Hiyama's age as well as math! Maybe her teacher would be impressed and give marks. The stalker-girl smiled.
Some of these questions seemed familiar. At least the words Yuki recognized seemed to be in familiar order. Number two reminded her of a past quiz. Wasn't the answer "Humans tend to never eat their own feces, as they have not the stomach to handle extra E. Coli."
Number three was another repeat. This one was, "Accept the exception." Hiyama-sensei hadn't thought of these questions very hard, had he? Yuki giggled and moved onto the next question.
Her memory stopped short. On the bright side, she could recognize a name, Joe to be exact, and the word, "blue shirt." She made a random guess and put: "Joe was hot with the ladies."
The rest of the test went on like this, either she recognized a question or she didn't. (I planned this with Dzetsu herself, so all is well.)

Hiyama collected the quizzes. The sweat pouring off the students' foreheads pleased him a little. His stomach tingled with joy. Placing the neat pile on his podium, he pulled a stack of worksheets from his bag.
"Everyone," Hiyama smiled again, glee rushing through him. "You can work on these worksheets while I correct the quizzes!"
Normally, Hiyama would wait to correct them; he would go to the messy and crowded teachers' office (By the way, in Japan, teachers have a shared office. If you do something bad, you'll go to that office while either the teacher who caught you or a group of teachers, or maybe even the principal will come and yell at you for shaming the school.), but he decided working on his desk in the corner of the room would be better than apologizing for the curry incident he left on the P.E. teacher's desk.
At his desk, Hiyama started to correct the quizzes. He pulled the first one off the pile and stared at it. Somehow, the question answers looked awfully familiar...
Wait a second; this was last week's quiz. The questions were the same, albeit worded slightly differently. Everyone had flunked last week's, and this week, the score was only fractionally higher.
"Oh, everyone!" Hiyama stood up. All the students sighed and looked up from their hard work in front of them.
"I gave the wrong quiz questions! This one won't count towards your grade. It was last week's though, and I'm disappointed that you didn't get higher scores!"
Every student's faces lighted up with joy. Not count towards their grade? That was one of the best news they had gotten since Hiyama caught a bad cold and they got to watch movies for three classes.
"So, here's a quiz with the right questions!"
A moan of pure disappointment weaved through the classroom. As Hiyama wrote the questions on the board, it was noted that they were EVEN HARDER. Most of them couldn't even read the questions, and if they could, hell if it made sense!
Needless to say, EVERYONE would fail this quiz. The highest grade would probably be a thirty at this rate!
(Asian school systems ARE very hard; much harder than American school settings. You can't even compare.)

Yuki's jaw dropped. Now those new questions on the board COULDN'T be English. It must have been French or Spanish. The characters all formed extremely large words, most of them over 7 letters long.
Yuki tried to sound out the first one. P...o...l...i....t...i...c...s... What the hell was that word? Well, there was nothing to save the poor girl now. She gave up and began doodling. And writing random answers. Maybe she would strike lucky and get one or two right.
One. A barrel of apples. Two. She ate an entire barrel of delicious apples. Three. Apples are a delicacy in many countries. Four. I like things that are apple flavoured. Five. Fall reminds me of red apples.
And that's how the rest of the quiz went for poor Miss Kaai.

Zatsune moaned. She didn't wanna take another popquiz. This one seemed to be pulled out of Hiyama-sensei's Buttpitt. The first ones were the hardest. Sensei most of gotten lazy on the last ones. Zatsune finished the first one, it took five minutes. After the first one all the others didn't take as long. Zatsune didn't care for a good or a bad grade. She just wanted to know the stuff. Like if she knew english she could talk to more ppl. She finished her quiz with 1 1/2 minutes to spare she dropped it off at Hiyama-sensei's desk. "Sensei, can i see my test results after class? I am new so I didn't take the quiz last week." Zatsune said. She didn't care about her grade she just wanted to know it. She waited for a reply
Akaito moaned. He just decided to copy Inukai next to him. He made sure not to get caught but he probably would, he didn't care. He would get a F anyways. He copied Inukai quickly and handed in his paper with 2 minutes left. He lucked out.

Th-that wasn't the actual thing? The things written on the board. What on EARTH were they? Oh, he knew that one! But... the rest. What on earth was Hiyama doing. Purposely making them fail or something? Len hit his head against his desk, and let out a groan. Today was definitely not going well.
After a long moment of heart wrenching stress, Len finally finished. As he looked over the answers, he bit his lip. Oh gosh, he was definitely going to bomb this. None of these even looked right. He went to go turn his test in, then walked back to his seat. He made a silent prayer, hoping that he might at least get a semi-good grade, that won't hurt his good average. .... Yeah, as if that would happen.

Ryu sighed. She then smirked when she saw the board. She was very fluent in english...She read the words with ease. Yeah she was glad she had to go to America the first few years of her life. So this was easy. Now if this was math then. Well she was going to be in trouble. Sighing she got up and took her paper to Hiyama-sensai."I am very fluent in english. But I am horrible in math. That wouldve been a challenge for me...,"she said in english and then smirked.
Neru however was texting and forgot all about the new grade. Sighing she look up at the board and groaned. She sighed and wrote down something. Q1- We all love to text. Q2-Texting is my life! Q3-I hate school. Texting rules! Q4- Ryu is fluent in English and has very poor texting skills... Q5-SORRY ENGLISH SUCKS! And so on and so forth. Then she turned her paper in and then went back to her seat to text again. ((Ryu is fluent in English because her first few years of life were in America...she is japanese but she is still new to the lanuguage...))

Hiyama once again gleefully collected the quizzes. The students were even more perplexed than last time! As Zatsune passed her quiz to Hiyama, she asked him a question.
"Sensei, can i see my test results after class? I am new so I didn't take the quiz last week."
"Points off for not capitalizing that 'I', but all right."
All the students looked totally freaked that Hiyama could even tell if they made capitalization or punctuation mistakes in their SPEECH. How boss was that?
Ryu stood up and shoved her paper in Hiyama's face. Why the hell was she-- The class helper or Hiyama himself was supposed to come and collect it. Rude students.
"I am very fluent in english. But I am horrible in math. That wouldve been a challenge for me...,"
Hiyama sighed. Her sentences were filled with errors and he doubted that she was fluent in English at all! The way she spoke was heavily accented, and she was out of practice, it seemed.
"Capitalize English for it's a language, Hanuna-san. Also, I'd appreciate it if you stayed on topic when you spoke to me. Would've is a contraction and deserves to have an apostrophe, don't you think? In addition, I believe that you shouldn't but a comma after those periods."
He paused and raised his eyebrow at her. "I doubt you're fluent in English with that grammar, Hanuna-san. In fact, maybe you should stay after class for some extra help?
"Think about it, Hanuna-san," Hiyama said in (slightly accented, but perfect grammar) English. His 'think' sounded a bit more like 'shink,' but he knew the message got across as Ryu walked back to her seat and sat down in shock.
She received a few admiring stares from the other students. They'd never seen a student talk back to the teacher. They were usually sent to the teacher's office to get yelled at for their insolence, and so, rarely any one dared.
Then, the students tearfully pulled out their indecipherable worksheets in order to continue struggling while Hiyama flounced over to his desk. He couldn't wait to see these results.
All the students were able to read the letters, but most of them didn't understand the words or were confused with the sentence structure. And even more totally bullshitted the answers, obviously not even bothering to figure out what the questions were.
Inukai had fallen asleep and his test was blank. A big, red, fat zero was drawn on the top margin. His name wasn't on there, but it was too obvious to guess who else would be drooling all over their paper.
Zatsune seemed to have a basic understanding of English, but she made many grammatical errors, being new to the language. Her spelling, punctuation, and sentence structuring needed work. Her score was 15.
Yuki wrote her answers in Japanese. Automatic failure. He wrote another zero, a happy bubbly feeling tickling his insides. Except Yuki failed EVERY quiz and test. Oh well.
Ryu's test had neat, bubbly lettering. He had high expectations for this one. Her letters were proportionate to the others, and written straight on the lines. It wasn't huge, like a kindergardeners writing, but it wasn't tiny either. It was easy to read. Her grammar structure was quite good, but she made a punctuation error.
It was obvious that she may have lived for a year or two in America, for her grammar was quite good, but not as good as a native's. She even mixed up one of the sentence's grammar with grammar from a romance language, such as Spanish or French.
Her answers did not pertain to the questions. She didn't even read them, most likely. In addition, she dissed the English language, was angered Hiyama a bit, for it seemed like she was putting down his job.
Her score was going to be a 40, but he took off half a mark for the diss. Her final grade was a 30 percent. Her score was twenty points below the average class grade.
Ryosuke's grade was a 35, and for a bit, his was the highest grade, but then Nodoka achieved a score of forty. Man, these grades were low. But, of course they were! English was one of the hardest languages in the world! It was stuffed with spelling exceptions, strange grammar, words from other languages, the weirdest letter combinations, and tough pronounciations.
Miku's quiz seemed rushed, as if she was upset that they had to take another hard quiz right after the first one. Her writing was almost impossible to read, and Hiyama knew that her handwriting usually wasn't that messy! After some struggling, her final grade came to be a twenty.
He gleefully marked many of the quiz papers with forties, an occasional twenty, a few zeroes, some thirties... And then he reached Len's paper.
It was slightly damp from the poor yellow-haired student's finger oil and sweat. The letters were neat, although one of his tees were simply a horizontal line (stroke order, folks). It was easy to see that his writing was strained, but it was legible.
Len had obviously studied sentence structure, although Hiyama could tell that he didn't understand some of the words that were written on the board. Perfectly understandable. His punctuation and capitalization was phenomenal, and only a few spelling mistakes dotted Len's paper.
Len achieved a lovely grade, well, lovely considering the rest of the class. It was a sixty-five. The highest grade in the class. There was no doubt that Len was a ready-to-learn, concentrated, hard-working student. Hiyama did feel some sadistic joy giving low grades, but when he saw a truly diligent, earnest student, a good grade was definitely in order.
Many of the students were about three-quarters of the way through their worksheets by the time Hiyama was finished correcting the quizzes, thanks to their textbooks. Hiyama pulled Zatsune's quiz from the pile of last week's and speedily marked it, due to her request. When he had finished, he stood back at the podium.
"It seems like Len achieved the highest mark of sixty-five!"
The students clapped and cheered and looked at Len in admiration and awe. He had gotten quite the score on this difficult test. Len still looked disappointed.
"Everyone else, please try a bit harder! But seeing how many of you didn't achieve such a great mark..." Hiyama smiled and clapped his hands together. "It won't count towards your main grade! Just think of this quiz as a way to help you study and learn English!"
Hiyama looked Zatsune steadily in the eyes after his mini speech. At this point, the teenagers had slumped in their seats in relief and were whispering happily and excitedly to each other.
"Zatsune-san," Hiyama said, "Because you wished to see your mark on the previous quiz, I'll show you before I leave to the next classroom."
Zatsune nodded and Hiyama stood straight again and smiled at the class. Then he looked at Moriyama, who was wiping a few sweat beads off of his forehead.
"Moriyama-san, can you pass out this next set of worksheets? It's for homework. After that, we'll read aloud from the textbook."
Moriyama jumped up. "Yes, sir," he said before obliging. The students groaned. Right after the good news came some more bad news.

Len had his head down, awaiting the most hoped for out-come. Soon enough, Hiyama-sensei stood at his usual place, getting ready to tell them something. He looked up, one eye closed, one open.
The words flowed through his ears like a melodic song. Sixty. Freakin'. Five. That....SUCKED! It was better than what he expected, but still was going to dent his grade. He sighed, placing his head in his hands. He should've studied more. Eh, oh well. The class seemed to applaud his good grades, and that seemingly made him feel better.
Hiyama-sensei was giving them a worksheet. Oh thank goodness. Something to do other then quizzes! He smiled, giddy with happiness already. As soon as he got his worksheet, he started etching down words, his name, the date, everything. Time to get things done right. He had to pitch up his grade to where it was before. Maybe the sixty-five wasn't going to lower it too much, but it still wasn't tolerable. Every kid his age needed to know these things.
In fact, Len wasn't exactly the smartest of the apples. He had a problem with reading sometimes, but doing his homework and paying attention was a sinch! He let his feet swing back and forth, already glad again, the thoughts of the test just a thing of the past.
He had his game face on. Let's do it
Why throw such a big deal over some school work any how? Gosh, the boy couldn't help but to enjoy having things to do. In some of his other classes it was just 'sit, work, silent time for the rest of the period.' It was boring, and he couldn't stand it. This class was different. Hiyama-sensei always had something to give them. He didn't understand why the others didn't like working so much. Would they rather sit idly and do nothing? Blech.
[Just gonna update again I guess xD]

Miku couldn't help but wonder what she actually got. Sure, she was glad that the quiz didn't count, but...
Clenching her head in an attempt to get herself to stop thinking about the grade, she accepted a worksheet from Moriyama-san and stared at it thankfully.
This should help clear her mind. And that nasty gut feeling that she did somewhat horrible.
After writing her name in the top left corner, she looked over the questions, which weren't so difficult. Doing each question at a pace, she just hoped that there wouldn't be another test or quiz soon again.

Zatsune listened to Sensei's reply. She smirked and sat down. Zatsune was feeling fine after she got her grade back. She just wanted the first grade. Knowing made Zatsune feel better. She sat down and moaned again. Hiyama-sensei gave a worksheet out for homework. He was practically stabbing everyone in the back. Zatsune did as he said and took out her textbook. She sat back waiting for class to end. Zatsune wanted to go to lunch. Akaito was devastated, he got a zero. Taito-nii would ban peppers from him. Oh wait, Taito didn't care about Akaito. Because Taito-nii is a buttpitt. The same kind of buttpitt that the quiz came out of. Atleast Akaito could look forawrd to lunch with Neru. What bliss to feed her some of his homemade red pepper rice. He got out his textbook and stared at it blankly. He was so hungry. (Hey can Luka be the music teacher?)

(Sure. I'm just waiting for Ryu to reply, and then they can have music class before students have lunch.
I might as well explain before yet another inconsistency occurs:
At lunch time, high school students usually eat in their classrooms. I guess if you're a manga fanatic, you can just go to the roof to eat because I mean, which main character doesn't?
Now most people are just in love with the idea of home-made bento, but yes, you can bring it and eat it. Sometimes girlfriends make it for their boyfriends and whatever. But there's also a cafeteria so you can buy something to eat. Lunch specials, curry noodles, melon bread, other bread, rice balls, whatever.
And there are vending machines to buy drinks from, including coffee milk, strawberry milk, milk tea, etc. etc. It's not just juice and soda like in the U.S. Vending machines are everywhere in Japan. They multiply like bunnies. They sell used panties, beer, self-heating bento, hot drinks, cold drinks, and so on.
Ahem. Continuing on, you can go outside too, and eat in the courtyards or whatever. Just as long as you aren't going to arrive late for class, it's fine, really. At this point, you can skip too, but that's a bad, bad thing to do since the classes are so advanced in the first place.)
